Following a very stressful event, such as a fire, an attack or accident, a traumatic childbirth or operation, or following experiences like war or abuse, we can start to develop signs of post traumatic stress. This can happen soon after an event or months and sometimes years later. A person who is experiencing such difficulties often describes having unwanted pictures of the event(s) come in to their mind; having upsetting dreams about it or feeling like it’s happening again. They might also try to avoid things that are linked to the event(s) and feel distant or different from those around them. In addition, they can feel more angry or irritable, easily startled and find sleep or concentration hard.
